At least two people have been confirmed dead and several others injured along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway following a tragic accident on Sunday, January 5.
The incident, which involved a head-on collision between a Nissan and a matatu bus, occurred near the Prison Bridge in Naivasha.
One of the vehicles, an Eldoret Shuttle Nissan matatu, collided with a Nairobi-bound matatu bus, leaving behind a scene of devastation.
Five people sustained serious injuries from the tragic accident.
“Let’s have a very open conversation this year, is head-on collision avoidable? Head-on collision between Eldoret Shuttle Nissan matatu and a Nairobi bound matatu bus at Naivasha near prison bridge,” Sikika Road safety said.
“Two have lost their lives at the scene while other 5 have serious injuries.”
After the back-to-school season approached and people started travelling from upcountry, the country has witnessed an increase in road accidents.
Today’s accident comes a day after five people got injured in a road accident involving two private cars near Nyakairo, Kinungi, on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway and were evacuated to Naivasha Subcounty Referral Hospital after receiving first aid from St. John Ambulance responders.
Two days ago, ten people perished after a matatu plying the Eldoret-Kitale route collided head-on with a lorry at the Chemoset area in Soy along the Eldoret-Kitale highway, Friday.
The incident was confirmed by Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi who stated that four other passengers sustained injuries.
He added that the injured passengers were rushed to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret for treatment.
Mwanthi said it is suspected that the matatu was travelling at high speed before veering off its lane, causing the accident.
According to witnesses, the driver of the lorry, which was heading towards Kitale, lost control and hit the oncoming matatu from its side at Chemoset junction, killing the driver and eight passengers on the spot.
Police reported that one of the five survivors died upon arrival at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret, where they had been rushed for specialized care.
Police officers investigating the horrific road crash revealed that the Great Rift Shuttle Sacco matatu had arrived from Nairobi in the early hours of Friday, dropped passengers in Soy, and rushed to Kitale to pick up more travelers.
The vehicle was involved in the tragic accident while heading back to Nairobi through Eldoret.
