Muscat – A recent research breakthrough could help in the early detection of breast cancer, making it easier to identify even the smallest and deepest tumours. Led by Dr Mohammed Abdullah Salim al Husaini, Assistant Professor at Arab Open University in Oman, the research used a cooling gel to improve thermal imaging techniques, offering hope for more accurate and non-invasive detection methods. The research focused on understanding how temperature variations in breast tissue, influenced by factors such as tumour size, depth and blood flow, can aid in detecting breast cancer. By developing a numerical simulation model using COMSOL software, Husaini and his team were able to explore how these factors affect heat distribution in breasts of different sizes. Muscat – The Social Protection Fund has completed the disbursement of the family income support benefit to more than 53,000 beneficiaries whose applications met the required conditions and regulations for eligibility. In a statement, the Fund announced that as of February 2025, a total of 53,072 cases had been approved for the benefit, with financial aid exceeding RO8million. The number of new cases eligible for support reached 30,810, while 22,262 cases continued receiving the social security pension. The Fund further revealed that the total number of applications submitted during the eligibility period—from 20 October 2024 to February 2025—amounted to 31,375. This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen social welfare and provide financial assistance to those in need across the Sultanate. Source link

Muscat – Oman will celebrate International Tourist Guide Day on February 21 in recognition of the vital role of guides in enriching visitors’ experiences and promoting the country’s heritage and attractions. Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) marks this occasion annually acknowledging the contributions of tourist guides in shaping Oman’s tourism industry. Anwar bin Mohammed al Mahrooqi, Head of Tour Guides Section at MHT, said guides act as “ambassadors of Oman, offering visitors an understanding of the country’s diverse cultures, rich history, natural landscapes and unique heritage”. Muscat – The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has raised concerns following the publication of an illegal practice involving the use of metal detectors to search for and excavate archaeological artifacts, in clear violation of the Omani Cultural Heritage Law. The Ministry has urged the public to refrain from such activities and emphasised that legal measures will be enforced in accordance with the Omani Cultural Heritage Law, as set out in Royal Decree (35/2019). Muscat – The sultanate is set to host the 3rd GCC Beach Games from April 5 to April 11. Organised by Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) and Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, ‘Muscat 2025’ will bring together athletes from the six GCC nations – Oman, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain – to compete in eight beach sports. Muscat – Malak bint Khalid al Ismaili, a final-year student at College of Medicine and Health Sciences of Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), has been awarded the Clinical Excellence Award in Research at the 21st Regional Meeting of Eastern Mediterranean Medical Students’ Associations (EMR21). She was feted for her research on ‘Abdominal Pseudocyst Post Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt.’ The EMR21 conference, organised by International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations, concluded on February 10 in Muscat, bringing together over 450 students from 18 countries. Malak’s research examined over 200 cases, presenting a systematic review spanning over 50 years (1969–2022) of abdominal pseudocyst cases – a rare complication of ventriculoperitoneal shunts used to treat hydrocephalus, which is a buildup of fluid in cavities called ventricles deep within the brain.  Her research analysed data from 208 patients – the majority children (62.8%).
