PHOTO URN Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Younger swineherds from various parts of Uganda have been amazed by the products made out of pigskin leather, seeing it as another avenue to make money from their herds. These products were part of the display at the Piggery Value Chain Symposium, which attracted over 800 swineherds, both physically and online. It also attracted other piggery value chain players and sector support structures, both state and private. Displayed items included bags, shoes, and protective gloves. Emilian Mwebe from Kyotera district, who was born and raised in a pig-rearing family, says that in all his life, he had never seen any product made from pigskin leather, though he has heard of the fact that pigskin leather exists. “I didn’t expect to see it in Uganda,” he exclaimed. The MP for Rwampara East in Rwampara district, Julius Tusiime Karuhanga risks legal consequences for failure to pay Shs9,600,000 debt. Karuhanga was on 30th April, 2024 served with an intention to use notice by lawyers from MARK MWESIGYE & CO. ADVOCATES on behalf of their client Anne Natwijuka. He has up to 12th May to clear this debt or face court music. It is alleged that on 1st August, 2023 Mp Karuhanga approached Natwijuka for a soft and friendly loan to a tune of Shs5m. He was supposed to pay back Shs6.3m as the full and final payment and in a 30 days period or by the end of the same month (August). However, nine months later, Karuhanga is yet to pay back. DEPUTY Minister of State in the President’s Office (Regional Administration and Local Government), Dr Festo Dugange has directed District Executive Directors for Kilolo and Bukoba Urban Districts to submit to the ministry reports on the progress of the construction of health centres in their areas. He said the ministry wanted the reports assess the possibility of replenishment of the budget to complete the projects. He said the government recognizes the efforts by citizens in building dispensaries and health centres in their areas and that DEDs were supposed to update the authority on the progress especially in those areas where citizens have decided to start the construction on their own.
