Muscat – To celebrate the 54th National Day, three Omani hikers – Hamdan al Riyami, Sami al Bahri and Majdi al Bahri – embarked on a challenging 54km trek through the mountains. The 16-hour trek on November 18 started at 3am and ended at 7pm.
Speaking to Muscat Daily, Riyami informed that the trek in Dakhliyah started from Al Hajar village in Wadi Bani Kharous in the wilayat of Al Awabi, passed through scenic villages of Jabal Akhdar and ended at Birkat al Mouz. The hikers traversed valleys, plains and rugged mountains, carrying Omani flags and reveled in the natural beauty of their surroundings.
“This trek was our way of celebrating the National Day and expressing loyalty to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik,” Riyami said, while highlighting their dedication to promoting physical fitness, raising awareness on mountain hiking as a recreational activity, and showcasing Oman’s natural and tourist attractions.
The hikers are no strangers to such feats having celebrated the 52nd and 53rd National Days with similar hikes. This year’s trek involved meticulous planning, including scouting routes, assessing weather conditions, and preparing essential supplies. They carried light snacks, including dates and nuts, to sustain their energy during the long walk. Hydration was also a priority, with each hiker carrying ample water and electrolyte drinks to combat the physical demands of the trek.
Challenged by rugged terrain and fluctuating weather, the hikers took brief breaks to enjoy the breathtaking views and share moments of camaraderie, all while singing patriotic songs that echoed through the mountains.
Throughout the trek, the trio received enthusiastic support from residents of the villages they passed, who praised their efforts to spotlight Oman’s beauty and foster the culture of fitness. “We wanted to celebrate Oman’s National Day in our own way as hikers,” Riyami said. “Dakhliyah is an incredible place for hiking.”
Looking ahead, the three plan to organise a 55km trek next year to mark 55th National Day, continuing their tradition of celebrating the nation’s heritage and natural splendor through hikes. With their passion for adventure and love for their country, these hikers aim to inspire others to explore Oman’s extraordinary landscapes and embrace the culture of health and fitness.
