Kandy Hospital Police arrested two brothers from the same family for allegedly assaulting a doctor at the Kandy National Hospital while under the influence of alcohol. They have been handed over to the Kandy Police Headquarters for further investigations.
According to police, the incident occurred on the hospital premises around 7:30 PM the day before yesterday (26). The assaulted doctor has been admitted to the hospital’s emergency treatment unit for medical care.
One of the suspects reportedly entered the hospital premises via a shortcut connecting the Peradeniya main road to the hospital in a three-wheeler. However, due to heavy congestion on the hospital premises, the hospital administration decided to restrict the use of this route for personal needs. As a result, security personnel denied him entry.
During this time, the doctor arrived on a motorcycle and encountered delays due to a verbal altercation between the three-wheeler driver and the security officer. Although the driver claimed to be a hospital employee, the doctor insisted that he should produce an identification card to gain access to the premises.
It was during this exchange that the suspect reportedly assaulted the doctor. When hospital police attempted to arrest him, the suspect’s brother arrived at the scene and acted aggressively. Both individuals were subsequently taken into custody.
Medical examinations confirmed that both suspects, who reside in Gemunu Mawatha, Hantana, were intoxicated at the time of the incident.
Further investigations are being conducted by the crime division under the guidance of Kandy Police Headquarters Chief Inspector Rasika Sampath.
