Muscat – Represented by Foreign Ministry, Oman will host the 8th Indian Ocean Conference (IOC) on February 16 and 17 under the theme ‘Voyage to New Horizons of Maritime Partnership’.
The event underscores Oman’s commitment to enhancing maritime security, supporting sustainable maritime trade, and fostering international cooperation to address common challenges faced by countries within the Indian Ocean region.
According to H E Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi, Foreign Minister, the fact that Oman is hosting the conference reflects its strategic role in promoting regional stability and prosperity.
He noted that the conference will serve as a platform for exchange of ideas and insights on the future of the blue economy and ocean governance.
“Oman aspires to facilitate constructive discussions that contribute to advancing the interests of all participating nations, reinforcing its position as a key player in regional diplomacy.”
The conference will focus on several critical areas, including strengthening maritime partnerships to enhance collaboration among Indian Ocean nations, and supporting sustainable development to ensure environmentally responsible maritime trade and resource management.
It will also address key issues related to maritime security, such as safeguarding the freedom of navigation and leveraging modern technologies to improve port security and governance.
Additionally, the event will provide opportunities to explore economic cooperation by reviewing competitive economic data, identifying new areas for trade, and fostering investment opportunities across the region.
In alignment with Oman Vision 2040, the conference aims to deepen economic ties within the Indian Ocean region, showcasing Oman’s leadership in maritime sustainability and its growing capabilities in maritime transportation and security. The event will highlight Oman’s pivotal role in preserving the sustainability of the Indian Ocean’s resources and promoting regional economic integration.
The conference is expected to welcome representatives from over 60 countries and international organisations, making it a vital platform for both bilateral and multilateral engagements. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss innovative solutions to regional challenges, establish new partnerships, and strengthen existing relationships, contributing to a more interconnected and secure Indian Ocean region.
Since its inception in 2016, the Indian Ocean Conference has evolved into a premier international forum for enhancing cooperation among Indian Ocean nations and key global powers with strategic interests in the region. Countries including Oman, India, Sri Lanka, Australia and Singapore have played influential roles in shaping the conference’s development, reinforcing its importance as a platform for strategic dialogue and regional collaboration.
