Diamonds show signs of life
After a year of steep declines, Botswana’s diamond industry is showing early signs of a rebound. Rough diamond sales from Debswana, the joint venture between De Beers and the Botswana government, reached nearly P2.3 billion in January, according to Bank of Botswana data released Friday.
The figure is a sharp improvement from the P24 million recorded in January 2024, when demand collapsed under the weight of oversupply. While still below historical averages, it is the highest monthly sales total since June 2024, raising cautious hopes that the worst may be over.
