The visiting Queensland Chiefs U16 team competing in the 2025 Raro Rugby 7s International Tournament will feature five Cook Islanders.
The team will face the Pacific Nomads, Nukzpower and Te Ariki Toa Eels in the three-day tournament starting tomorrow at the National Stadium in Nikao.
The Queensland Chiefs have taken out the 7s competition on the Gold Coast three years straight, the team officials said.
“So we thought we’d bring them over to Raro to experience island life and represent where it all began.
“We’ve got five Kuki (Cook Islands) boys in the squad – three of whom have never been home – so it’s pretty special to bring them here and show them their roots.”
The Queensland Chiefs U16 players have been through a professional development system, whether it be the NRL system, Super Rugby, or representative footy.
“We wanted to showcase their talent here at the Raro Sevens, and hopefully learn a thing or two from the local boys – and maybe they can pick up something from us too.
“After a hectic year of footy, this trip’s about enjoying the game, soaking up island life, and having a bit of fun before heading back to reality.
“Massive thank you to everyone for having us at Raro Sevens – we’re looking forward to ripping in. See you in Raro!”
