ADDRESSING gender inequality in Fiji remains a complex challenge rooted in deep societal norms and patriarchal traditions, says the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre coordinator Shamima Ali. She said this in response to revelations at a panel discussion on Leadership and Gender Equity to Promote Women’s Leadership in the Pacific on Tuesday, that women representation in the Parliament stood at just nine (9) per cent in 2025, even though more women than men voted in the last election. Ms Ali pointed out that despite over 70 per cent of tertiary graduates in Fiji being women, very few held top positions in trade unions, education, politics, or the workforce. “So, it’s an ongoing issue, and the issue is because in a patriarchal society like ours, we often see men as leaders, and we are conditioned into that, that men are the leaders.” She said historically, men were leaders and women were conditioned...

Sudan’s rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) agreed to a proposal from the United States and Arab countries for a humanitarian ceasefire, the group said in a statement on Thursday. The RSF and the Sudanese army have been at war for two years and although they have agreed to various ceasefire proposals during that time, none have yet succeeded. “In response to the aspirations and interests of the Sudanese people, the Rapid Support Forces affirms its agreement to enter into the humanitarian truce proposed by the Quad countries,” the RSF said in a statement, with the “Quad countries” referring to the United States, Egypt, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The announcement comes less than two weeks after the RSF took over the famine-stricken city of el-Fasher in the western region of Darfur. This is a developing story, more details to come…

Regeringen fremlagde torsdag middag sit bud på en ny karakterskala, som skal gælde fra skoleåret 2030. Den nye skala vil have karaktererne 00, 01, 02, 4, 6, 8, 10 og 12. Durante las próximas dos semanas, 23 presuntos miembros del Cartel del Caribe Sur, desarticulado el pasado martes durante el operativo más grande en la historia del Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ), enfrentarán la audiencia de medidas cautelares. El proceso judicial, denominado caso Traición, inició la tarde del miércoles y se prevé que se extienda debido al número de imputados, quienes en conjunto cuentan con 17 abogados defensores (públicos y particulares) y dos fiscales en representación del Ministerio Público. La audiencia está a cargo del Juzgado Especializado en Delincuencia Organizada (JEDO) del Primer Circuito Judicial de San José y se tramita bajo el expediente 21-030208-0042-PE.
