Mogadishu (HO) — Somali National Army (SNA) forces have
killed several Al-Shabaab militants, including senior leaders, during a
military operation in the Bay region on Thursday.
According to officials, those killed include Abu Khalid
(Yahye), Al-Shabaab’s finance leader in the Bay region, and his unnamed deputy,
along with several militia members who were guarding them.
The operations were conducted in the villages of Buul Dooro,
Kor Ing Roogi, Dhambalka, and Buur Rooring, all located in Deynuunay district
of Bay region.
The Commander of the 8th Brigade, 60th Division, Ali Mohamed
Adan (Ali Adoow), told state media that the operations were part of ongoing
efforts to eliminate Al-Shabaab from the region.
“These operations are part of the Federal Government’s
broader campaign to eradicate Al-Shabaab from the entire country, particularly
in Bay,” Commander Ali Adoow said.
The killing of these senior figures follows remarks by
Defense Minister Ahmed Macalin Fiqi, who announced on Wednesday that at least
800 Al-Shabaab fighters, including 50 senior leaders, have been killed over the
past year in operations targeting Al-Shabaab and ISIS militants.
Minister Fiqi added that the government has launched a new
phase of military operations aimed at dismantling Al-Shabaab strongholds,
focusing on areas recently recaptured and those previously under government
control.
