Tropical Cyclone Rae was moving in a South-southwest at about 15km/hr towards the Lau group at 6:00am this morning, said Fiji Meteorological Service. At about 6:00pm today, it will be located 90km Northwest of Kabara or 100km Northeast of Matuku. By 6:00am on Tuesday, TC Rae is expected to be located 160km South-southeast of Matuku or about 180km South-southwest of Kabara. A hurricane warning is in force for the Moala group. A storm warning is in place for Vanua Balavu, Tuvuca, Lakeba, Moce, Cicia, Nayau, Mago, Yacata, Katafaga, Oneata, Vatoa, Fulaga, Nairai and Gau. Recidivist offender, 23-year-old Lucas Kamana, has been sentenced to 16 months in jail for charges of burglary, joint burglary and contempt of court. Well-known to the Court, Kamana was told that he demonstrated lack of honesty, he had ongoing disregard for the law and re-offended under the care of the families who provided him support. Justice of the Peace Paul Turepu said Kamana has a criminal and traffic history, and since 2017 he has appeared before Court on numerous occasions indicating his lack of compliance with the law. “It seems that every time you appear before the court you acknowledge your wrongdoings, you apologise and tell the court that you will not appear in court again. “Deepfakes, videos, audios — it’s so easy to produce disinformation at home for free with the help of artificial intelligence. What might happen in five or 10 years is really scary,” said Hendrik Sittig, director of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation’s media program in sub-Saharan Africa. The World Economic Forum’s 2024 Global Risk Report also described AI-supported disinformation as a No. 1 threat, and according to Sittig, it often aims to undermine democratic principles and divide societies. In cooperation with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Karen Allen from the Institute for Security Studies in South Africa and Christopher Nehring from the cyberintelligence institute in Germany documented AI disinformation in Africa and Europe around national elections.
