Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary and National People’s Power (NPP) founding member Tilvin Silva yesterday said, with a huge mandate, the people of Sri Lanka have entrusted his party with a great responsibility and assured that the NPP will live up to people’s expectations.
Addressing the media at NPP Headquarters in Pelawatte, Battaramulla soon after the party secured a two-thirds majority in Parliament, Silva stressed the new Government will only use the sweeping mandate it received to fulfill people’s expectations and drive the country towards socio-economic development and not to bolster his party’s image, strength or supporters.
Highlighting his party’s victory in the North, East and Upcountry areas which have a sizable proportion of Muslim and Tamil community members, Silva emphasised that people had defeated the divisive politics practiced by past rulers.
Silva also said Sri Lankan people had defeated the traditional and elite politics where power was concentrated in the hands of a few elites with a family lineage.
“They spent public money to maintain their luxurious life styles. We will ensure such things will not happen in the future”.
Silva said especially in the North and East areas, opposing politicians had tried to use racism and religious sentiments as tools against NPP, but the people had rejected such canards.
“We are not rulers. We are here to serve you. We have a responsibility to put the country back on the rails and we would prepare a plan and move ahead accordingly,”.
Silva said that the new government has the task of rebuilding the state’s economy and also implementing the promises made in the election manifesto including introducing a new constitution where abolishing the executive presidential system will be a key feature.
Silva said NPP had been able to garner 1.2 million more votes than what the party received at the Presidential Election held one and half months ago and added that it was a sign that people had rejected the canards spread against NPP by opposing politicians who tried to create apprehension and doubt in the public mind against the party’s programme.
“The increase of votes show that the public have rejected false accusations against NPP and have endorsed our work during the last one and a half month”.
Silva also said the NPP during this short period had been able to change the country’s election culture where violence, rigging and other malpractices were ‘part and parcel of the game’, both during campaigning and in the aftermath of polls.
Silva attributed the massive victory of the NPP to a collective effort and added from the central leadership to the leaders and workers on the ground, all worked with sincerity and in coordination to achieve the goal.
Silva claimed that the NPP aimed to make people win and make the state stand up again.
While calling NPP’s victory a turning point in the country’s history, Silva said that the NPP victory was comprehensive, all-encompassing, and includes everything as the party had garnered votes on an equal term without any divisions such as territory, ethnicity or religion.
General Secretary of the NPP Dr.Nihal Abeysinghe, Executive Committee members attorney Sunil Watagala and Savithri Paulraj also addressed the media.
