(ANN/Straits Times/ Agencies) – Pizza Hut China has introduced a bold new offering that has set the culinary world abuzz – a thick-crust pizza topped with a deep-fried bullfrog. Named the Goblin Pizza, the creation is a collaboration with Chinese tech giant Tencent to celebrate its hit mobile game, Dungeon and Fighter: Origins.
The unique dish pays homage to one of the game’s characters and was announced on Pizza Hut China’s Weibo account on November 18. Initially available for pre-orders from November 18 to 20 as part of a limited-edition set meal priced at CNY169 (approximately BND37), the pizza includes exclusive game merchandise. It officially launched for general sales on November 21 and will be available until December 19.
The pizza’s vibrant red sauce base is topped with a whole fried bullfrog, complemented by halved hard-boiled eggs, black olives (resembling the frog’s eyes), and a sprinkling of coriander. Its striking appearance and exotic topping have sparked a wave of reactions online, ranging from humor to curiosity.
One Weibo user humorously quipped, “Who will send it to the Italians?” while another tagged the Italian embassy in China, suggesting they “send troops.”
Food industry consultant David Henkes, who shared the advertisement on X (formerly Twitter), highlighted the cultural significance: “In proof that other countries and cultures prefer different proteins, Pizza Hut is offering a pizza topped with a frog in China – and frog is trending.”
Social media platforms, including Reddit, have seen a mix of reactions. While some users expressed horror, calling it “a felony” or suggesting it be “ribbit-ed” into the trash, others defended the unique topping.
“Fried frog legs are so good! Maybe shred the meat next time – it could work,” said one foodie. Another quipped, “I’m more upset about the olives.”
This isn’t the first time fast-food chains in Asia have experimented with bold and unconventional menu items. McDonald’s China caused a stir in 2020 with its Spam and Oreo burger, blending sweet and savory flavors. Domino’s Japan followed suit in 2021 with its Crispy Fish and Chips Pizza, combining fried fish, potatoes, and tartar sauce.
Asia’s fast-food scene has long been a playground for adventurous offerings, reflecting local tastes and cultures. Other quirky creations include ramen topped with sushi, cheesecake, or even marshmallows.
