DRIVERS across the country have been warned to be vigilant as thousands of students return to school today.
The warning comes as the first road fatality of the year was recorded yesterday.
Director Traffic Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana said a 46-year-old farmer of Vivili Village, Savusavu, was walking along Naidi, Buca Bay Rd, when a vehicle coming from the opposite direction veered to the other side and hit him. The man died on the spot.
“It’s sad because we will start the new school year tomorrow, and drivers will need to consider the thousands of students who will be using our roads,” he said.
“We can expect massive movements on our roads tomorrow (today), especially in the morning and in the afternoon.
“We are calling on everyone to be cautious while on the road. If you are travelling in the bus, taxi, or even as a pedestrian on the road, please exercise safety at times.”
Police investigations into the accident in Savusavu are continuing as the driver is in police custody.
