Rice, lentils and dates received in 2023
Spoiled stock amounted to 1,556 metric tonnes
Portion of supplies distributed earlier in 2023
A stock of 1,556 metric tonnes of rice, lentils and dates received in 2023 under the World Food Programme (WFP) for distribution among low-income families and schoolchildren was found rotting in the Veyangoda Government Food Warehouse.
This discovery was made during an inspection on January 31 by National Integration Deputy Minister Muneer Mulaffer and MP Ruwan Mapalagama, who conducted an inspection following reports of the food stock being left to deteriorate.
Officials confirmed that the food items, which were initially meant for distribution, were now unfit for human consumption due to prolonged storage. They stated that while a portion of the supplies had been distributed earlier in 2023, the school holidays had led to a halt in further distribution, leaving the remaining stock to spoil in the warehouse.
Upon reviewing official documents, Deputy Minister Muneer and MP Mapalagama verified that the spoiled stock amounted to 1,556 metric tonnes of food that should have been distributed to schoolchildren and low-income families.
As an immediate step, the Deputy Minister and MP alerted the Gampaha District Secretary about the situation. However, during the communication, the District Secretary allegedly advised against informing the media, stating that it could place the Government in a difficult position. Attanagalle Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Prasad Fernando and Police officials were also present at the inspection. Further action is expected regarding the mismanagement of the food aid, as authorities assess the extent of the negligence involved.
