A significant plume of Sahara dust is affecting the island and the Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has issued a significant dust haze advisory.
The forecasters have advised the public to expect a significant reduction in visibility from late Monday night into Tuesday.
They said that a “yellow milk cast will be visible across the skies during this time.”
“Current satellite imagery shows a moderate to thick plume of Saharan dust haze across the Central Atlantic. Slightly hazy conditions are currently present across the island. Model guidance suggests that dust concentrations across the island will become moderate to thick in intensity on Monday night into Tuesday. As a result, a reduction in visibility over the land and coastal waters of Barbados is forecast. Concentrations are expected to decrease on Wednesday and slightly hazy conditions are expected until Thursday night,” the BMS said.
The BMS advises persons with respiratory issues or allergies to travel with or have all prescribed relevant medications close to hand.
Marine users and small craft operators are also advised to stay close to shore particularly if GPS is not in use on the vessel.
This advisory will be updated on Monday, December 23 at 6 p.m., or sooner if conditions warrant.
