Former top cop wants apparent black-ops hit job investigated
The MP for Okavango West, Kenny Kapinga, wants the killing of 10 alleged armed robbers by security agents on February 22, 2022 to be investigated.
“Alleged” is used in a legal context because the men were actually caught red-handed at the Gaborone main mall, whereupon they fled to a Phase 2 safe house. There they were mowed down by semi-automatic gunfire pouring out of Israeli-made sub-machine guns. The guns were fired by seven members of an elite Directorate of Intelligence Services strike force which had been scrambled from its base in Sebele. All were former Botswana Defence Force commandos and at certain points during the firefight, used a distinct shooting technique called “double tap.” The only survivor, a woman who had been in the house all along, fled the scene and was immediately arrested. Some eight hours after the stand-off began, Senior Assistant Commissioner Nunu Lesetedi, who is the Director of Crime Intelligence in the Botswana Police Service, emerged from the house and told a press gaggle that “we managed with the 10th robber.”
