I am very happy for Bruce Deachman. His journey through our health-care system reminds us that the system is so great that occasionally — just occasionally — a patient stumbles upon the proper treatment and care. It is good to know that there are bright spots in the darkening sky of our health-care system.

When Deachman wrote “it’s important to acknowledge that when the system works, it does so remarkably well,” what he really meant was that we should all be thankful that miracles do happen in health care.

My rehab experience was positive
Recently, I spent three weeks in the Queensway Carleton Hospital, mostly in the rehab facility — a very pleasant experience. I had exceptional care and all who tended me were efficient and kind. Even though they were very busy, they would take an extra few seconds to encourage me. The icing on the cake: the meals were delicious, something you don’t often hear about hospital meals.

Local group focuses on personality disorders
Re: Treasure the organizations that help families cope with mental-health challenges, May 9.
Thank you for highlighting the important work of Sashbear, a national agency dedicated to raising awareness and providing support for individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Its work is necessary and valuable.
The Ottawa Network for Borderline Personality Disorder (ON-BPD) has been providing vital support and awareness programs for families dealing with BPD and emotional dysregulation since 2004. Through initiatives such as the Family Connections course, which has reached more than 1,200 participants, we aim to empower families and provide resources tailored to their needs.

Two decades after its founding, our commitment to supporting families through education, skill-building and community resources remains unwavering. Our skilled volunteers are dedicated to making a difference for those affected by BPD in our community. We are grateful for the many supporters and donors who make our work possible.
Please visit us at www.on-bpd.ca if we can be of help.

Better solutions for climate change?
I just paid my house insurance. The premium was 19.8 per cent above the 2023 premium even though we had no claim for flooding, wildfire or wind damage. The increase is partly related to high insurance claims for those whose houses were impacted by climate change events like the current wildfires. This is above the tax dollars used to help Canadians impacted by these disasters. We are all going to share the cost of climate change.
We reduced our car travel by 10 per cent and lowered the thermostat by 0.5 degrees in the last year. My brother, who opposes the carbon tax, decided that it was too expensive to drive 250 km to see the eclipse. Small steps in response to price increases for fossil fuels. I, and most Canadians, would like to hear of a more effective, efficient way of slowing climate change.
