Marcus Garvey, born in Jamaica on August 17, 1887, was a political activist, publisher, and entrepreneur. He founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in 1914 to unite and uplift people of African descent globally. Garvey promoted Black nationalism, Pan-Africanism, racial pride, and economic independence. He also established the Black Star Line, a shipping company to support trade and transportation among the African diaspora. In 1923, Garvey was convicted of mail fraud tied to the Black Star Line and sentenced to five years in prison. The charges stemmed from accusations that he had used the U.S. mail system to promote and sell stock in the Black Star Line through misleading advertisements. Specifically, the prosecution claimed that Garvey and the company sent out promotional...

The global economy is slowing down, making it harder for labour markets to recover fully, according to the newly-released, World Employment and Social Outlook: Trends 2025. In 2024 global employment grew in line with the labour force, keeping the unemployment rate steady at 5 per cent, the report says. However, youth unemployment showed little improvement, remaining high at 12.6 per cent. Informal work and working poverty returned to pre-pandemic levels, and low-income countries faced the most difficulties in creating decent jobs. Challenges to recovery The report points to challenges such as geopolitical tensions, the rising costs of climate change and unresolved debt issues, which are putting labour markets under pressure. Economic growth stood at 3.2 per cent in 2024, down from 3.3 and 3.6 per cent in 2023 and 2022, respectively. A similar level of growth is expected in 2025, although a gradual deceleration is expected to set in over the medium term. Although inflation has decreased, it...

Jamaicans are being urged to familiarise themselves with the layout of their homes in the dark as a crucial step in earthquake preparedness and general safety. This advice was issued by Director General, Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), Richard Thompson, during a recent Jamaica Information Service (JIS) ‘Think Tank’ focused on Earthquake Awareness Month, being observed in January. “Learn [the layout of] your house so you can navigate that space in the dark. I don’t know how many persons try to just shut off all the lights at home and navigate in the dark. [This is] a practice that persons need to [constantly] do,” Thompson said. Power outages are common occurrences during emergencies such as earthquakes, and knowing how to move around the house in darkness is essential. “It’s not only for earthquake preparedness; it’s for general security. You don’t want to hear a sound and [you’re...

Minister Jay Ebanks at the Bodden Town Church of God Multi-Purpose Hall handover (CNS): What began as a church hurricane shelter project decades ago, which has since been largely funded by the public purse, was handed back to the congregation last week with a ceremony that attracted a huddle of MPs and government officials. Planning Minister Jay Ebanks made the official handover of the newly constructed Bodden Town Church of God Multi-Purpose Hall last week. The Cayman Islands Government subsidised the funding of the state-of-the-art facility by several million dollars because of the desperate need for more shelter space in the fastest-growing district. Prior to the completion of this facility, the Bodden Town Primary School was the only shelter in the area. This new hall, which will be used by the church except when it’s needed as a shelter, received around $1 million, its first cash supplement, from the controversial...

Overview: On his first day in office, President Donald Trump ordered the immediate shutdown of the CBP One app, which had been a critical tool for asylum seekers and migrants to schedule legal border appointments. The move leaves thousands of Haitian migrants, who relied on the app as a safer way to seek refuge, uncertain about their future as legal entry pathways shrink. In a swift and sweeping move just hours after being sworn in, President Donald Trump ordered the immediate shutdown of the CBP One app, a digital tool that had become a vital lifeline for migrants seeking legal entry into the United States. The decision, announced on the Customs and Border Protection website shortly after Trump’s inauguration, canceled appointments for migrants attempting to cross the southern border legally. “Effective January 20, 2025, the functionalities of CBP One™ that previously allowed undocumented aliens to submit advance information and schedule...
