It was an embarrassing defeat for Italy’s government. Just weeks ago, at an EU summit, far-right Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had been promoting her “innovative” approach to processing asylum applications in non-EU third countries. But now, the processing and detention facilities constructed in Albania expressly for this purpose are empty once again — save a few Italian staff. In October, Meloni’s government had been forced to return the first 16 asylum seekers it was holding in Albania back to Italy. Four claimed to be minors or ill. A court in Rome had ruled that the remaining 12 asylum seekers had the right to a trial in Italy. Early November, the ring-wing administration made a second attempt, and transferred seven adults from Bangladesh and Egypt to a detention center in Albania. The EU Commission on Friday predicted a slight increase in growth in the eurozone currency union and a continued fall in inflation in 2025. However, the commission also pointed to risks arising from geopolitical tensions, as well as weak investment and a high cost of living. What was the commission’s 2025 forecast? The EU Commission’s forecasts showed eurozone growth ticking up to 1.3% in 2025, up from 0.8% this year, and described the bloc’s performance as “steady, albeit subdued.” It predicted inflation would drop to 2.1%, compared with 2.4% this year. “With the EU economy steadily recovering, growth should pick up more speed next year,” commission vice-president Valdis Dombrovskis said. “Still, given today’s high geopolitical uncertainty and many risks, we cannot afford to be complacent. Newly inaugurated President Prabowo Subianto unveiled Indonesia’s new and enlarged Cabinet last month, naming ministers, deputy ministers and heads of various national agencies. In total, he appointed 109 members, including a mix of professional and political appointees, with some ministers remaining on the job after serving for Prabowo’s predecessor, Joko Widodo, also known as Jokowi. But only 14 of the appointees are women, and in the 48-member Cabinet, there are only five female ministers. The low figure has drawn criticism from gender equality campaigners, who have expressed concerns over inadequate representation of women at the top of government. Jokowi, for his part, began his 10-year presidency with nine women in the Cabinet and ended it with four.
