President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali has said the management of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) company will face consequences if the country’s power supply does not improve by 2025.
He spoke about the issue during the second episode of his show, “In the Seat.”
Power outages have been frustrating people and hurting businesses. The president explained that the government has invested a lot of money to improve the power system, and GPL needs to show results.
President Ali warned GPL’s management that if there are no clear improvements by January, there will be serious consequences. He said, “Heads will roll.”
The government is also looking into hiring technical experts to help manage the power system better. The president made it clear that the people responsible for the system must ensure it works properly.
When the current administration took office in 2020, the transmission and distribution lines were in poor condition due to lack of investment. Since then, the government has been working to upgrade the system.
A second power ship has been brought in to supply extra electricity. The government is also building a heavy-duty transmission line connected to a central control center to improve power reliability.
For the long term, a gas-to-energy power plant is being built in Wales, Region Three. It will be ready in 2025 and is expected to provide reliable, cheaper electricity. The project will reduce electricity costs by 50%, saving money for citizens.
