More than 150 new members have been appointed to the tenth Parliament of Sri Lanka, marking a significant influx of first-time legislators.
Out of the 196 members elected in the recent General Election, 146 are newcomers. The majority of these first-time MPs represent the National People’s Power (NPP), which secured 141 parliamentary seats sans the National List, including 130 first-time MPs. This makes the NPP the party with the highest number of new legislators.
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has eight first-time MPs among the 35 seats it won. Additionally, one new MP each has been elected from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC). The Tamil National Alliance (TNA), which won 8 seats, includes four first-time MPs. Independent groups and National List appointees further contribute to the tally, bringing the number of new MPs to over 150.
A three-day workshop on parliamentary procedures will be held on November 25, 26 and 27 for the elected MPs. This tradition follows every General Election to familiarise new legislators with parliamentary processes. The workshop will commence after the tenth Parliament is officially convened and MPs take their oaths.
The registration process for the new MPs began yesterday (17), with online registration available from today (18). To assist new MPs, the Parliament will open two information counters on November 19 and 20.
The official gazette listing the names of the elected MPs was published on the 16th, confirming the composition of the new Parliament.
