Courtney Dunkerton has been transitioning for more than four years and says the trans community often refers to the ongoing stigma they face at medical appointments as the “trans broken arm syndrome”. “It’s when our ‘transness’ takes over the whole appointment,” she told NewsWire. Ms Dunkerton lives in regional WA and will often see a trans doctor in Perth via telehealth for any medical matters related to her own transition. She said some doctors with no experience of transition did not understand certain things, which could be frustrating. “My local GP is great if I have an ear infection or stubbed toe, but all things trans I go telehealth to a doctor in Perth,” she said. “I’m having electrolysis to get rid of facial hair and it’s painful as hell, particularly the top lip.” Ms Dunkerton said she saw her GP about getting a strong pain killer and numbing cream,...

An Australia private health organisation has been targeted by a large-scale ransomware attack. National Cyber Security Coordinator Michelle McGuinnes said in a statement she had been advised of a large-scale ransomware breach incident on Wednesday afternoon. “We are in the very preliminary stages of our response and there is limited detail to share at this stage,” her statement read. “But I will continue to provide updates as we progress while working closely with the affected commercial organisation to address the impacts caused by the incident.” AFP authorities are investigating the situation, which is believed to be in its early stages. It’s understood the incident involves data being taken hostage by cyberminals. More to come. RPT

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has knocked back claims his government will shutter the Nauru offshore detention centre, calling reports about a forecast $250m saving from mothballing the processing facility “wrong”. “Operation Sovereign Borders is in place,” he told the 2GB radio show on Wednesday. “We now don’t send people to PNG, because that facility is closed. Nauru is open.” Host Chris O’Keefe pressed the Prime Minister on the budget’s forecast spend on “offshore management” within the Home Affairs department. The department’s portfolio statements show a decline in the program’s allocation from $604m in 2024-25 to $339m in 2025-26, $345m in 2026-27 and then $352m in 2027-28. Mr O’Keefe asked Mr Albanese why he was “mothballing” the centre, but the Prime Minister stated flatly: “We’re not”. “From time to time, media get things wrong.” He said the government was not saving $250m by taking detainees out of the detention centre. “That...

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has defended his budget as a “conservative” and “cautious” spend that would not spark inflation by “spraying cash around”. Appearing on the ABC following his budget speech on Tuesday night, Mr Chalmers rejected the argument his relief measures, such as $300 energy rebate for every household and rental bill relief, would heat up the economy and pressure the Reserve Bank of Australia to lift interest rates to keep inflation tracking on a downward trend. “I’m very confident in this budget that we are putting downward pressure on inflation, that we are being part of the solution to inflation, rather than a problem,” he said. “That’s because of spending restraint, the responsible economic management and the way we’ve designed our cost of living help.” 7.30 host Sarah Ferguson pressed the treasurer on how he could deliver more money into the pockets of Australians without triggering inflationary pressures, and...
