The Solomon Islands Aviation Sector is set for a significant safety boost through a new Rescue Fire Service Station for Honiara International Airport.
This work is supported by the World Bank through the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2) and is being implemented by Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA).
The new fire station is inline with a Design and Build contract model, requiring the Contractor to develop detailed designs covering civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, fire and hydraulics systems.
These designs are based on a concept provided by MCA and will adhere to International Civil Aviation Organization standards and regulations.
China Railway Construction Engineering Group Company Limited (CRCEG) has been contracted to carry out these works, with the detailed design stage soon to be completed. While the detailed design is progressing, other site preparatory works are underway including the demolition and relocation of the current Solomon Airlines Catering building and the Solomon Power transformer.
“The new lifesaving Rescue and Fire Services at Honiara International Airport is vital for ensuring passenger and crew safety, meeting international aviation standards, and maintaining operational continuity,” said MCA Permanent Secretary Alwyn Danitofea.
“It enhances the airport’s emergency response capabilities, protects the environment, and establishes the airport as a crucial hub for disaster response in Solomon Islands.
“This infrastructure will also boost confidence among airlines, travellers, and the local community, in the safety and efficiency of air travel in the country.”
In addition to the RFSS, SIRAP2 includes several transformative infrastructure projects; construction of four new bridges in Malaita Province (Kolofe 1, Kolofe 2, Su’u Harbor, and Bira Bridges), upgrades to Honiara and Munda Airports and Santa Cruz (Lata) Airfield, investments in air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces and support for ongoing regional airport maintenance.
These developments collectively aim to enhance connectivity, safety, and economic opportunities across the Solomon Islands.
